Moving Checklist:

 

    1. Two Months Before
      1. Sort and purge
      2. Research movers
      3. Create moving binder to keep track of everything all your estimates receipts and inventory of all items your moving
      4. Organize school records for your children’s school and arrange for their records to be transferred to new school district
    2. Six Weeks Before
      1. Order supplies boxes bubble wrap specialty containers
      2. Use it or lose it, start using up things that you don’t want to move like frozen or perishable foods and cleaning supplies
      3. Take measurements, check room dimensions at your new home if possible and make sure larger pieces of furniture will fit through the door
    3. One Month Before
      1. Chose your mover and confirm arrangements
        1. Choose your mover confirm arrangements such as sign contract and pay deposit
      2. Begin packing
          1. Start packing things you use most infrequently, such as the waffle maker, crock pot, spare dishes
      3. Label
        1. Clearly label and number each box with its contents and the room it’s destined for pack and label “essentials” box of items you’ll need right away
          1. Examples: change of clothes, tooth brush, medication, paperwork things you’ll keep in your car
      4. Separate valuables add items such as jewelry and important files to a safe box that you will personally transport to your new home. Make sure to put the movers estimate in this box.
      5. Do a Change of address
      6. Notify important parties. Banks, insurance, gyms, monthly subscriptions, pharmacy, doctor, dmv
    4. Two Weeks Before
      1. Arrange to be off from work on moving day
      2. Get a tune up on your vehicle
      3. Clean out your safe deposit box
      4. Contact moving company to confirm arrangements
    5. One Week Before
      1. Refill prescriptions
      2. Pack your suitcases
    6. A Few Days Before
      1. Defrost the freezer if your refrigerator is moving with you, make sure to empty, clean and defrost it at least 24 hours before moving day
      2. Double check the details of arrival time
      3. Plan for payment: if you haven’t already arrange to pay your mover with a credit card, get a money order, cashier’s check or cash for payment and tip. If the staff has done a good job, 10-15% of the total fee is a good tip. If your move was especially difficult, you might tip each mover up to $100. Don’t forget that refreshments are always appreciated.
    7. Moving Day
      1. Verify Make sure that the moving truck that shows up is from the company hired: USDOT number painted on side
